Glaucoma is the first cause of irreversible blindness in the world.

Physiology of Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative disease in which a number of factors lead to the premature death of retinal nerve fibres.
Throughout our lives, we lose nerve fibres at a rate of approximatively 1%. In glaucoma, however, the rate is much greater and leads to loss of vision.
Many factors are involved in glaucoma, but at present there is only one factor that can be controlled: intraocular pressure. Most treatment options for glaucoma therefore rely on the control of eye pressures.

Symptoms of Glaucoma
One of the key characteristics of glaucoma is its relative absence of symptoms. Contrary to what a lot of illustrations suggest, vision lost to glaucoma is not seen as a black patch - it simply disappears. This is because the brain adapts and makes up for any missing information.
Glaucoma therefore tends to be completely asymptomastic until very late stages, when a significant amount of vision is lost permanently. For this reason, 90% of patients are unaware of any symptoms at the time of their diagnosis.
